Lately,a new system test bench from the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) was inaugurated at ECOMAT in Bremen. The test rig was created as part of the BMWE-funded WISDOM project and was set up in the Virtual Product House (VPH). The aim is to comprehensively test and further develop future actuation systems for highly efficient, highly stretched wings.
Innovation for the next generation of wings
Highly stretched, slender wings are regarded as a key technology for more efficient and lower-emission aircraft concepts. The associated soft structures require suitable flight control and regulation systems. This is precisely where WISDOM comes in: The WISDOM integration and validation platform enables hybrid testing as well as the demonstration of intelligent control systems, for example for active load reduction and flutter suppression.
Measuring seven metres wide, two metres high and two metres deep, the test bench allows full-scale tests - for example of ailerons on modern commercial aircraft.
Maximum flexibility for comprehensive tests
A special feature of the test bench is its high degree of customizability: both load actuators (e.g. servomotors) and control hardware and software can be flexibly configured. This allows engineers to test not only ailerons, but also a variety of multifunctional "moveables" as well as the entire flight control system including its actuators and computers.
Strong partnership in the WISDOM project
As a project partner, FFT Produktinssysteme contributes its expertise to the development of innovative tests and is responsible for the development, construction and commissioning of the test bench. The core aspects here are the electrical system for load simulation, the HiL or hardware-in-the-loop system, consisting of control and measurement technology, as well as the modular design of the test bench structure.
Other partners in the joint project are Liebherr-Aerospace Lindenberg GmbH, Diehl Aerospace GmbH, Technische Universität Berlin.
Participating DLR institutes: Institute of Flight Systems Engineering, Institute of Aeroelasticity, Institute of Lightweight Structures and Design.
The project is funded by the Federal Aviation Research Programme (LuFo VI-2).
